Google is well known as the biggest and most relevant search engine result page producer. But what if Google was not really relevant at all? The truth is that Google is constantly updating their algorithm to prevent SEO’s like us from being able to manipulate them and put our clients on their first page. Why is Google constantly updating? It is partly because they want to find that highest point where their algorithm cannot be touched. Unfortunatly they are a long way off.

Google has many “items” in their algorithm that take the spidered information and categorize it dynamically “on-the-fly” based on a keyword searched. They have a mathmatical way of determining relevance. All these PHD’s on their payroll and common sense has not hit them yet. The Google algo still relies on inbound links within it’s categorization process. Regardless on how much they water down inbound links, the fact that they use them at all to determine a websites importance means that they will never have relevant results. We have personally seen their results manipulated by spammers which place completely irrelevant content on the top for an unrelated keyphrase. In addition, our company has used only white hat tactics to manipulate their results and consistently bring our clients to the first page for their target keywords and phrases.

We have created a mathmatical methodology for a new algorithm that does not allow for spam and does not rely on inbound links. But we probably shouldn’t go and release our spiders just yet… And until Google figures it out they will never be the relevant search engine.

We have been spammed hundreds of times in the past few weeks on our blog comments. Because of this, not only do we bad the ip addresses, but now we are going to publish the spammers ip for all to see. We hope this will deter any would-be spammers. Check back regularly if you want to find some IP addresses to blacklist.

Most bloggers hate to deal with spam. The standard spam plugin feature for comments in wordpress is to add nofollow links to spam. Webdesigntaxi.com uses such a feature, yet there are lots of people who add non-relevant comments to posts regardless. We rarely approve such a comment. We only approve relevant comments and comments that are clearly NOT used just to promote a business. Such comments do not receive any link benefit from us.

I figured we should post this to let would-be spammers know it is a waste of their time here. We ban IP address a large amount of the time. Automated posts from software are also useless. They are always off-topic and offensive most of the time as they contain links to illegal porn. At the very worst we track down said spammers and report them to their ISP’s, and authorities for their country, state, locality, and anyone else relevant.

The age of comment spam is over. It is no longer beneficial and is looked down upon. It is best to use comments wisely and participate in a post subject to drive quality traffic from our readers who want to know more about you because you provided a knowledgable comment. Your comment will be added almost guaranteed as long as your link is clean from viruses and bad content.

While hardcore Craigslist.org community members may find this post disturbing, I am writing it because I think it points out flaws in the system and needs to be corrected to flush out the spammers and make it a valuable classifieds service.

Spammers have been using Craigslist since they have heard how many unique visitors go there every day. It used to be that anyone can post without having an account.

What happened was that you can create a default email address in your cpanel so no matter what address on your domain (even fake) that you use to receive email, it will instantly be forwarded to your selected email address that is real. Combine that with people who own multiple domains.

It is pretty easy to post the same ad in different cities and categories. You can even upload the ad image to another domain or use a 301 redirect on a URL to get around spam filters.

A recent change made it so that you have to have an account, and a phone number has to be associated with that account before you can post in most categories.

This cut down on allot of spam at first. But spammers know that you can get around this issue by creating multiple accounts with multiple domain email addresses. Then the simply sign up for a ghost number with Vonage that forwards to your main number. It only cost $10 per month for an extra number with Vonage. You can use the number to verify the account on Craigslist then cancel the number with Vonage. While not all vonage numbers cannot be verified, most of them can.

I think that the way to truly get at killing the spam is to develop a script that checks for the same ad text, then verifies that the url in the ad is forwarded to another ad with the same text. On top of that they can do the same thing with image filenames and filesizes, then run the check as before with the redirect the link is pointing to.

While the account thing may have worked a little in the short term, it only lasted maybe a week and turned off other regular craigslist users that have Vonage numbers that could not be verified. It was a bad business move in my opinion when there are other technical solutions to the spam problem.
