Algorithms are a play of numbers and how those numbers are handled which gets applied to search keywords and phrases. The algorithm is quickly applied to the search that you do, and a website is displayed on the first page that beat out all the rest of every single indexed website for that keyword or keyphrase.

Google is a search engine that has a complex algorithm. The problem is that they do not rely on a good numbers based algo only. They also rely on old factors that are simply outdated and unreliable.

Example 1: You do NOT have to use meta tags (keywords and descriptions) in order to get indexed and ranked in Google. BUT if you DO use those meta tags and they do not match the content, then you lose points in the algorithm. If you use those tags and they DO match content for that page, then you earn a few points toward relevance.

Example 2: Inbound links are unreliable. It is one way that the rich can outperform the poor. Inbound (one-way) links can be purchased. In addition, you can use Digg, Twitter, and other social networks to generate inbound links & massive amounts of traffic.

You can search for blogs that do not have the nofollow attribute on them and comment on them. Make sure you comment appropriately and not just to get a link. If you respect other webmasters they will respect you. And you can ensure your comment will not be marked as spam. Do not post a link directly in your comment though unless it is relevant as a resource for the posts question or another comments question. You can post your link in the space provided which many blogs allow. You would also benefit from traffic on blogs that do use the nofollow attribute because you posted a quality comment and the person reading it wants to know more about you.

Well, today I stopped by my blog to check stats and I noticed my homepage has a PR2. It was a zero until today. Additionally, the blog is a PR1.

It isn’t great or anything. Other sites we own have high PageRank. I just wanted to give the heads up that a PR update took place this morning and you should all rush to your sites to see what yours is.

I noticed that we have visitors looking for this information, so here it is. When you are thinking of redesigning an old website, but you are worried about losing PageRank, there are steps to take to minimize or eliminate the risk altogether.

The first thing you have to understand is that if you are significantly changing content then you run this risk. Text content is what search engines are looking for and if you add or remove alot of it during the redesign then it is a significant change. Try to add new content after you have launched the redesign and gave it time to settle. 2 weeks sounds about right.

When you redesign sometimes you change filenames to be more search engine friendly. If this is the case then you have to tell search engines where that page has moved to. You would use a permanent redirect form each of those urls to the new page url so the search engine should transfer this easily. Your PageRank usually gets transfered to the new page as well. If you do not provide the redirect then you will lose that PageRank for the page already indexed by Google.

Try to give your images the same filenames if you can. It is a small item but it adds up in the end. Use the same anchor text too, then change it later after the launch just like you did with text content.

These are the basics, but if you follow them carefully then you minimize the risk of losing PageRank.
