DRTV goes small, but quickly returns
DRTV also known as Direct Response Television. It is the medium that is commonly known as television commercials. It is also a medium that has been suffering with the invention of the DVR/Tivo box. I can personally vouch for that statement as my better half is so spoiled that she huffs and puffs if you are too slow to skip past them during primetime.
With Tivo, how on earth can DRTV be surviving? Well, they havn’t been. But coming this following season DRTV will supposedly make a comeback when it promises to cut out 30 second commercials and make them significantly shorter. The result is a commercial that is so small that it is not worth accidently skipping past your favorite show. It also promises to use the actors IN the show you are watching to help promote the product displayed in the commercials which will bring the viewer back to wanting to stay with the commercial.
With all good things there is a catch in this arrangement. By reducing the length of commercials, it increases the amount of commercials that appear during your favorite television shows. This means that instead of a 5 minute commercial break every 15 minutes (which results in 3 commercial breaks) you will see maybe 6 commercial breaks, or more…
How will you react to this change?
